Interview: Edgar Cantero talks his new novel, MEDDLING KIDS

Edgar Cantero’s new book, Meddling Kids (out now in hardback from Doubleday), was described to me as “Scooby-Doo Meets H.P. Lovecraft.” As much as I had enjoyed Cantero’s first book, The Supernatural Enhancements, you would’ve had me at Scooby Doo. Meddling Kids reminds me of all the Trixie Belden / Three Investigators / Nancy Drew / Hardy Boys books I read as a kid, to say nothing of the Encyclopedia Brown vibes that the movie Mystery Team had. So, yeah: every single thing I enjoy. It tells the story of how The Blyton Summer Detective Club reconvenes after a decade

FIRE & ICE: A Tragically Funny Movie

Sometimes in life we are blessed with amazing collaboration projects where two amazing artists in their respected fields come together and birth something so great it doesn’t make sense that it could be real. This, however, is not the case with Fire & Ice, while we do have two brilliant and groundbreaking artists in their respective fields. When legendary animator Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Wizards, Lord of the Rings animated movie) and legendary artist Frank Frazetta teamed up together, no one could have fathomed that Fire & Ice was going to be a total bust. While technically Fire &

The Grindhouse Sounds of Isaac Williams

Nearly every afternoon last week, my wife came home to me blasting music out of my laptop while I read on the living room couch. Despite a stack of half a dozen vinyl LPs awaiting review, I couldn’t stop listening to Isaac Williams’ Soundcloud mixtapes. Going back four years, Williams’ mixes all cull their sounds from cult and exploitation film scores and trailers, but the shapes they sonically take are astonishingly diverse. The latest is entitled Trailer Trash Vol. 1, and is over an hour of perfectly-mixed movie trailers. That might be some varsity level stuff for mixtape lovers, but

On the #OscarsSoWhite Controversy

Is it passe to be talking about the “Oscars so white” controversy yet? Even if it is, this isn’t a new issue. If you were talking about it in 2016, you’re not being topical so much as you’re being late to the party. The Oscars sorely lacking racial diversity has been an issue forever. The fact that people have based this year’s controversy around the omission of certain nominations isn’t an advancement for diversity, it is a sad and shallow intrusion from the mainstream into an awards ceremony that effectively should honor the best in the industry. More distressing aren’t

2015: The Cinepunx Top 10s

The task was simple.  A spattering of interesting contributors were commissioned to put together a list of their top 10 records and movies of 2015, including some short write-ups for their five favorites in each category.  Some found no difficulty in completing this task  (a miracle for those of us who painstakingly deliberate internally on this very subject the entire year).  Others found it a bit more challenging.  But after countless misspellings, 4 different variations on how to say The Hateful Eight, the submission of what can only be assumed is a dissertation on media in the year 2015,  and
