CINEPUNX Episode 73: Taking a GIRLS TRIP with Tony Rettman

THEM PUNX ARE BACK IN TOWN!!

This is a very SPECIAL EPISODE of Cinepunx, and by “special” we mean incomplete. NOT BECAUSE OUR GUEST, TONY RETTMAN, AUTHOR AND PUNK EXPERT IS NOT AMAZING! Dude rules. No, it is ’cause our beloved Joshua Alavarez could not join us.

DO NOT FRET! Friend of the show, booker, artist, and MAN ABOUT TOWN, Evan Vellela, was available to stand in. Granted, I talk a LOT so I did most of the talking, but it was still cool. Hey, we forgot to take pictures so here are some older pictures with Tony in them (Cover photo by Greg Pallante)

Tony is a writer whose last three books have chronicled specific aspects of the hardcore punk scene. His latest book, STRAIGHT EDGE: A CLEAR HEADED HARDCORE PUNK HISTORY, is the first expansive oral history of the movement. Tony has previously written NYHC: NEW YORK HARDCORE 1980-1990 and Why Be Something That You’re Not: Detroit Hardcore 1979-1985

He also previously appeared on episode 49 of THIS VERY PODCAST!!

Tony decided we would discuss 2017’s Girls Trip, a movie I fucking loved, so glad for that. We also spent a good deal of time discussing his new book and his process.

Liam has written about film, music, politics and faith for a variety of publications in real life and online. Despite his advanced age he can be seen moshing in the greater Philadelphia area, usually to a cover song. He can be seen sitting in the audience at the newest comic book film, the retro drive-in screening of a Fulci film, or catching a series of Jodorowsky films. Liam has worked in social services, events planning, arts curation, education, community organizing, faith communities, and scooping ice cream. He has worked with festivals like This Is Hardcore Fest and The Awesome Fest. Despite all these things, Cinepunx is definitely the coolest thing he has ever done.
